BIG YELLOW BLOBS AND THE BOX THAT BUZZES
Personal project. Supported by the 2024 Light Up the North Shine Artist Program and at least three mildly anxious bees.
Imagine a photo booth fell in love with a beehive and they decided to make art together. That’s roughly what this is.
At the centre: The Box That Buzzes — an interactive projection where visitors stare into a giant flower, press a button, and are instantly transformed into cartoon bees. Their faces then flutter into the world of the Big Yellow Blobs, where hundreds of other bees drift about, probably wondering what they did to deserve this.
Behind the scenes, a Python script trims faces, sorts files, and keeps the hive running. Isadora handles the rest — the music, the lights, and the sense that something slightly ridiculous but possibly profound is happening.
Nearby, two peep boards beckon you closer with strange voices and motion sensors, while The Klipper — a large illuminated bird with a digital eye and too much self-awareness — watches from the corner, blinking encouragement.
It’s part light show, part digital ecosystem, part accidental group therapy for bees. Mostly, it’s an excuse for people to buzz about and feel quietly delighted.
